Family, friends and Freemasons are proud to congratulate Paul Wharton-Hardman BEM, of Leyland St Andrew’s Lodge No 7391, on his installation as the new Mayor of South Ribble. Paul, who also serves as Secretary of Chorley and Leyland Group, was officially sworn in at South Ribble Borough Council’s annual meeting on Wednesday 14 May 2025, with his husband Chris Wharton-Hardman by his side as Consort.

Paul has been a dedicated borough councillor for over a decade, known for his tireless work supporting the local community, championing inclusivity and encouraging young people to believe in their potential; frequently speaking at local universities about overcoming adversity and breaking down societal barriers.
Raised in a working-class family in a terraced house in Leyland, Paul’s path has been shaped by hard work, resilience and a deep commitment to service, values that are strongly reflected in the principles of Freemasonry.
As a Freemason, Paul embodies the Masonic virtues of brotherly love, relief and truth. “Freemasonry teaches us to support those in need and to serve our communities with integrity and humility,” said Paul. “These are values I carry into my public life every day, and which guide my work as Mayor.”
Paul’s service record speaks for itself; years of working with the NHS ambulance trusts, 1,000s of volunteer hours during the COVID-19 pandemic, and being awarded of the British Empire Medal for frontline service. Now a qualified nurse working in a senior leadership role, Paul continues his commitment to improving healthcare and community wellbeing.
As Mayor, Paul has chosen equality and inclusion as the theme for his year in office. “As a gay man with ADHD, I know what it feels like to be underestimated,” he said. “Freemasonry has always welcomed men of all backgrounds, and I’ve found it to be a space that celebrates diversity and mutual respect. That’s the kind of community I want to build as Mayor.”
During his Mayoral year, Paul will be supporting four local charities close to his heart and aligned with Masonic values of charity and relief: Teddies for Loving Care, St Catherine’s Hospice, SLEAP, and Miles of Smiles, all of which support children, families and those facing hardship across South Ribble.
David Bishop, Chairman of Chorley and Leyland Group, said: “Paul’s appointment is a proud moment for our Masonic community. His dedication to public service reflects the very best of Freemasonry and we are delighted to support him in his Mayoral year.”
West Lancashire Freemasons extend their congratulations to Paul and Chris and wish them every success in their year of service. For more information or to invite Paul to a community event, you can send him an email at mayor@southribble.gov.uk
