Brethren of Tyldesley Lodge No 2572, have celebrated two years since the start of their monthly Brass Band Concerts, which have proved an overwhelming success. Following the COVID break, brethren decided it needed to raise its profile in the town to help with recruitment.
Tyldesley Lodge member David Peacock, a local brass bandsman, suggested that they resurrect the monthly Brass Band Concerts in the town. These concerts were once run by Tyldesley Brass Band but had ceased a few years previous when the hall where they took place was closed and was later demolished by the council.
The local Parish Church was also keen to utilise its facilities and was more than happy to provide the venue. David’s contacts in the brass band community and his association with the church helped them set up the first concert in March 2022.
Since the start, attendance has steadily grown, having enjoyed performances from some of the best bands in the country. From their own Tyldesley Band, Astley Youth Band and other local bands, they have also enjoyed performances from the world famous Fairey Band, who perform at the Christmas concerts. Besses o’th Barn also performed at the Remembrance Day concert and they’ve also enjoyed two special concerts with the British Army Brass Band that included some local children from the Fred Longworth High School Band.
These concerts have been of great benefit to the lodge for a number of reasons. Their profile in the community has risen, which has led to three candidates for the lodge. The concerts have also increased their charitable giving, with all profits from the concerts going to charities and good causes in the Tyldesley area. Since the start they have now donated £7,200 in total and Tyldesley Parish Church, who host the concerts, have also found the benefit by new people attending and finding out what they have to offer for the community.
This is a great example of what getting involved in the local community can do. We have already had visits from other lodges who are interested in similar projects, including Darley Lodge No 6521 in Bolton who have now started their own concerts, which David has been assisting them with. We are looking forward to another great year and hopefully more candidates.
