The atmosphere at Victoria Park in St. Helens was warm and friendly as members of the Mersey Valley Group gathered to support our veterans on Armed Forces Day and to raise awareness about the principles of Freemasonry.

The day commenced with the arrival of Sandy Kean, who transported the West Lancashire Masonic trailer, a beacon of information and connection. Eager members of the Mersey Valley Group were already bustling around the site, with John Gibbon, the Mersey Valley Group Vice Chairman, and David Jameson, Mersey Valley Group Assistant Membership Officer, pitching in to set up the trailer in preparation for the expected stream of visitors.

Once the trailer was positioned, there was just enough time to enjoy a delicious bacon sandwich along with a cup of tea or coffee, a perfect start to the day before the crowd arrived. Shortly after the initial setup, Mersey Valley Group Chairman David Atkinson joined the team, further energising the group. Their efforts were soon complemented by a visit from Jim Williams of Dominion Lodge No 4289, the Armed Forces Representative for Mersey Valley Group, who stopped by the trailer for a friendly chat and to share thoughts on the day’s significance.
A truly touching moment unfolded as veterans, dressed in their uniforms proudly displaying their medals marched by to thunderous cheers and applause from all in attendance. The sight of them being saluted by the crowd created a memorable and heartwarming experience that resonated deeply with everyone present.
During the event, members of the Mersey Valley Group spent many hours interacting with visitors who had come along, curious about what Freemasonry stood for. They actively distributed informative leaflets and engaged in lively discussions with both young and old, keen to learn about the values and initiatives that Freemasonry had to offer.
The gathering was undeniably a resounding success. Group chairman David Atkinson and Jim Williams expressed heartfelt appreciation to every attendee for their show of support for the Mersey Valley Group and their pride in representing the West Lancashire Freemasons. With spirits high and enthusiasm palpable, anticipation for next year’s gathering is already building, promising even more connection and community spirit.
