Knitwits cast on

Some years ago Mary Edgar brought together some like-minded ladies, not only to knit but to socialise and be able to receive advice and support. When Chairman of Woolton Group Andy Whittle heard that they needed more wool he came to the rescue.

Following a group social function at which the usual raffle took place, the money was put towards buying wool for the Knitwits. The Knitwits have previously received grants from a number of organisations but due to the recession have found it increasingly hard to get any funding to purchase wool for this worthy cause, so the Masons have assisted with a bumper delivery of assorted wool to assist and keep the ladies supplied. Vic Albin (group vice chairman) and Mike Cunliffe (group secretary) had the pleasure of visiting the Longview Knitwits, a group of volunteers who knit baby clothes for the newly born children at Liverpool Hospitals.

Vic and by Mike arrived as the ladies were about to start another session of knitting to keep up with this new supply of wool. The ladies are all volunteers and try to raise money for wool and other materials by holding charity events themselves. Unfortunately, Mary Edgar, who had been honoured as resident of the year in Huyton, was not able to be present on this occasion so Vic presented the bumper package to Sylvia Jones, Secretary of the Knitwits.

The ladies were delighted, as they require as much wool as possible to continue to supply clothing for the newly born babies at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital. The Knitwits attend The Gate Community Centre, Princess Drive, Knowsley, Merseyside, meeting on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. Many of those attending not only see it as a hobby, but as somewhere to socialise and receive advice and support. A range of voluntary organisations visit them each week offering advice and help on a variety of issues. These include energy saving tips, what benefits they could be entitled to, and support for carers.

All proceeds made from their endeavours go towards buying equipment for premature babies. Mary Edgar, Chairperson of the Knitwits, is passionate about people getting involved with this group and everyone is welcome.
