The Furness and South Lakeland Group Masonic Fellowship took to the road, rails and water to enjoy a day of fun and fresh air in the South Lakes sunshine. It is said that if you find a good recipe, write it down. So, this is an account of the day, presented here as a recipe for a ‘grand day out’.

Collect a group of 32 like-minded Fellowship friends and add to that an enthusiastic and well-connected pair of organisers. Then take a good pinch of nostalgia in the form of a steam train and a lake steamer boat. The method is to load the mixture of friends into the steam train carriages at Haverthwaite Railway Station and travel back in time to a bygone era.
Proceeding on to the lakeside along the interesting and beautiful River Leven line. When ready, take the fellowship friends out of the steam train carriages and gently lead them to a pier and place them in seats of their choice aboard a lake cruiser called the Tern. Cruise gently for about six miles on Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, through some of the most beautiful Lake District scenery. Unload the fellowship friends and allow them to mingle and chill out in nearby Bowness-on-Windermere. After four hours, repeat the process in reverse, travelling back to Lakeside on a larger lake cruiser called the Teal. Then transfer the fellowship friends onto the waiting steam train to travel back to Haverthwaite station.
This recipe should be kept safe and stored for future use. The finished product should be garnished with a good-sized helping of thanks to Dot and Joe Crabtree for organising the whole thing. For any enquiries about the Furness and South Lakeland Group Fellowship, contact: janetridal@boretree.co.uk
