Following on from the Christmas period, the foodbank set up at Urmston is continuing into the New Year! The opening times are 12:00 – 15:00 on Monday and Friday and it is expected to carry on until 31 January, although with the success they have had to date and the regular donations from the local public, it may well be able to carry on for longer if there is a continued demand.
To date, the foodbank has collected in excess of four tons of food and toiletries representing over 8,000 items via donations from local people and businesses!
There have been consistent levels of assistance from the South Eastern Group brethren, but as you can imagine, with the kind of effort involved in undertakings of this nature, there is always room for more volunteers for both collecting, sorting and delivering bags of produce.
From reports by foodbank administrator Shaun Brookhouse, it is estimated that in the first two weeks of this year, upwards of 120 bags of food and other products have been delivered to grateful families throughout the area, together with numerous crates both delivered and collected by organisations such as Trafford Veterans and local care homes amongst others.
Although it was initially thought that there was little local need for the foodbank, it has proved to be a great success and as previously stated it continues to accumulate and distribute donations. This demonstrates that there is a need and thus and demonstrates that Masons serve a useful role in the community and will help to publicise this tremendous organisation in a good light and also act as a means of attracting new members.
Anyone who wishes to volunteer their services or arrange the collection of donations can, as a first point of contact, email Shaun Brookhouse at email@example.com and he will make suitable arrangements.
