Changeable weather did not prevent the golfers of the Lancaster and District Group from having a very enjoyable day when they took part in the local round of the West Lancashire Provincial Golfing Tournament at Bentham Golf Club. In a keenly contested competition, 19 representatives from lodges in the area played for the individual trophies as well as the opportunity to represent the group in the finals at Lytham Green Drive Golf Club.
The principal guest at the event was Lancaster Group Chairman Jim Wilson who attended the awards dinner held in the clubhouse dining room and later presented the prizes. He commended all the participants on their efforts and individual successes, particularly praising the charitable contribution the event would be raising for donation to the West Lancashire Freemason’s Charity. He observed that this was a wonderful effort, combining donations made by lodges and chapters within the group together with the £140 raised from the day’s raffle.
Poulton le Sands Lodge No 1051 almost swept the board by collecting the Group Trophy, the Morecambe and Heysham Trophy and lodge member John Cherry completing the ‘hat trick’ by scooping the best individual score shield. Gordon Rae of Pilling Lodge No 7879 was the winner of the ‘nearest the pin’ prize.
Arthur Laycock, the group golf representative, thanked Jim for attending and encouraged more local golfing Masons to take part in future competitions. He stressed that all the money raised through the event was passed on to the charity and that no administrative costs were deducted.
