The regular convocation of the Earl of Lathom Chapter No 730 marked the exact date in 1975 on which Alan Smith PPGSN was exalted into the chapter. As in 1975, there was a large attendance at Chorley Masonic Hall to witness Alan marking this milestone in his Masonic career.

Assistant to the Provincial Grand Principals Paul Hesketh officiated and was accompanied by the Chorley and Leyland Group Chairman David Bishop and many grand officers and Provincial Grand Stewards.
Alan was initiated into Euxton Lodge No 7192 in 1965, and was a founder member of the former Runshaw Lodge No 8537 in 1974. He was appointed to the acting rank of Provincial Junior Grand Deacon in1990, promoted to PPJGW in 1992, and received Grand Lodge honours with the rank of PAGDC in 1996. Alan also served as secretary of his lodge and Secretary of the Leyland Group for many years.
He was exalted into Earl of Lathom Chapter on 30 June 1975 and was installed as first principal in 1992. His first appointment to Provincial Grand Chapter was in 1996 with the rank of PPGSN. Paul summarised his address by saying that Alan had made a marvellous and wonderfully dedicated contribution to Freemasonry. He has given much during his life and the companions present on the evening recognized and appreciate it.
The companions later enjoyed a convivial evening at the festive board at which the toast to Alan was proposed by Vic Norris, who also presented him with a gift on behalf of the chapter members.
