Over the course of the last three years Zachary Lewis has been studying at Staffordshire University, during his time at university Zac has shown a passion for all things design.
From year-to-year, Zac has been amongst the highest achieving students in his class, only receiving firsts for the projects he has submitted. In Zac’s opinion this is due to both his background and growing interest in engineering and his passion for learning.

Zac was initiated into The Lodge of Chivalry No 3974 in October 2019 by his stepfather who is currently the WM. He was passed to the second degree earlier this year. Sadly his third degree was cancelled due to COVID-19. To read more about Zac’s journey in Freemasonry click here
In his last year, he was set the brief to design a product or system that will greatly relieve on-site injuries, for those working in construction. During this period, we were tragically hit with COVID-19 pandemic, causing the university to shut down, forcing all students to take on a virtual way of learning. With nothing to do but stay at home, Zac jumped feet first into his design work to ensure that he designed the most efficient and reliable product he could. He even built a working model using a small 3D printer he bought. Whilst juggling his university work, Zac also ran ‘The Design Society’, a university-based design group that Zac founded in his first year. Zac applied his knowledge to help his fellow students with their own work.

During all of this he also took some time to focus on the university itself as an appointed student representative for his industrial design course. It’s Zac’s belief that all of these factors played into the reason why he was awarded the Chartered Society of Designers Award. This award is only given to those industrial design courses that hold a CSD Membership. This means that only a few students each year are awarded such an award. However, Zac’s class was made up of around 25 other students. This award follows an advanced membership to the CSD which can be used to enhance networking and promote his work as an industrial designer.
