Thornton Lodge raises funds for SSAFA

Two members from Southport’s Thornton Lodge No 8008, Tom McKenzie and Tony Brougham, manned the SSAFA stand at the Southport Flower Show. This was made possible through the generous help of donations from many members of Southport lodges and also the Community Social Fund. The money raised enabled them to hire the stall and buy plants to sell to the public to raise funds for the association.

The SSAFA, (Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen and Families Association) is a military charity of which both Tom and Tony are members.

During the four days of the show they had many visits from Freemasons and members of the public, with many of them coming from outside the Southport and West Lancashire areas, who purchased plants from their stand and all of whom were very complimentary about their support of the SSAFA.

The attention from the banner over the stand received lots of support from non-Masons and in fact resulted in gaining a possible initiate for their lodge, as well as at least two other members of the public who showed interest and were sent over to the West Lancashire Provincial Membership trailer to get more information on joining.

During the course of the show the stand raised over £1,700 for this very worthy course and it is hoped that through the support of Southport Masons they can improve on this figure next year.
