In all fairness it isn’t a game that gets a lot of press or TV coverage. It’s not an international sport that attracts substantial sponsorship, inflated transfer deals or indeed, six figure salaries. It is however, a sport that is very special to the members of Blainscough Lodge No 8532. If you’re still wondering what it is, then the simple answer is, ‘Conkers!’
The lodge holds an annual championship competition each year, in which members and their guests compete for a very magnificent trophy. This year saw Allan Farrington smash his way to success when he shattered the hopes of Chris Jones in a nail-biting final.
Photos from the event show that contestants were prepared to travel from such exotic and far flung places as Heysham in order to compete. Even grand officers thought it wasn’t beneath their dignity to exchange their ‘posh regalia’ for a ‘sixer on a bit of string!’
As with almost everything that Freemasons involve themselves in, charity was the underpinning motive for this suspiciously juvenile caper with various Masonic causes benefiting including the West Lancashire branch of the Masonic Trout and Salmon Fishing Charity.
In a direct challenge to any ‘nut swingers’ who want to make a challenge next year, Allan has said he will take on anyone who ‘thinks they’re hard enough’. So, if you’re bonkers for conkers, get yourself along to Blainscough Lodge.
