An unexpected hiatus in the succession planning of Dalton in Furness Lodge No 6828 afforded an opportunity for Stuart Brackstone to ascend to the chair of the lodge of which he is a joining member. A Mason for over 40 years, a past master of Vale Lodge No 5256 and a member of several other orders Stuart is well known in Masonic circles. With the opportunity presenting itself he readily grasped the chance of being the master of a lodge in the Furness and South Lakeland group.
The principal guest on the evening was Chris Butterfield who was accompanied by seven acting Provincial officers in the persons of Richard Wilcock, Phil Preston, Barry Fitzgerald, Paul Fuery, Bernard Snape, Chris Gray and Ian Thompson. Assistant Provincial Grand Master and lodge member David Grainger was also present, as were the Furness and South Lakeland Group chairman Peter Schofield, his deputy Gary Rogerson and secretary Barry Hadley.
They were all able to witness Steve Murray install Stuart as his successor in a thoughtful and dignified manner. He can reflect on a job well done, as well as a year of fine service as head of the lodge.
The address to the newly installed master was delivered by David Smith, the address to the wardens by David Grainger and that to the brethren by Chris Butterfield. They all performed their task well as did Jamie Lindsay, Elezio Terre Jnr and David Baker in presenting and explaining the working tools of the third, second and first degrees respectively.
It was a ceremony which attracted many favourable comments from the assembled brethren.
To mark the occasion a cheque of £300 was presented towards the Masonic Charitable Foundation 2021 Festival and £850 to the West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity.
During the proceedings, director of ceremonies David Ozanne; his assistant Kieron Mullan; treasurer Peter Dismore MBE and secretary Paul Rose MBE were thanked for the work they had done on behalf of Dalton in Furness Lodge, both on the evening and during the year.
The dining facilities at Dalton in Furness Masonic Hall being insufficient to cater for the numbers wanting to dine, the installation banquet was held at the Fairfield in Barrow in Furness Masonic Hall. A splendid meal, provided by Mike Elliot of the Crown Hotel on Walney Island, was enjoyed by 104 members and their guests.
