With the benefit of glorious sunshine, members Starkie Lodge No 1070 once again held their annual family fun day, this time at Fleetwood Hesketh Club in Fylde Road, Southport. This was well attended, with over 60 guests enjoying the festivities.
Organised by the WM John McGrady and assisted by his family, the main theme was a crown green bowling knockout competition. This was overseen by long time bowler Alwyn Johnson, who ensured everyone participating almost kept within the rules; however, a certain amount of flexibility was the order of the day due to the inexperience of the participants.
At a suitable lull in the proceedings, the assembled guests were invited to partake in a superb buffet lunch, which had been organised and laid out by John’s family. Everyone agreed that this was one of the highlights of the day, with more than enough food to satisfy all.
During lunch, a charity raffle had been organised which raised £300. This was followed by a competition of the nearest bowl to a flag, won by Mike Foster, which raised a further £30. All proceeds will be donated to Queenscourt Hospice, Southport.
The bowls competition restarted and eventually saw Steve and Nicky Cropper take on Mike and Jo Foster for the right to be called champions of the day. In a nail-biting final, eventually Mike and Jo had swept all before them and received a fruit basket and bottle of wine as winners.
All in all, this was a superbly enjoyable day and has set a high benchmark for years to come. Well done John.
