Assistant Provincial Grand Master David Grainger attended the installation meeting of Hawkshead Lodge No 4354 as the principal guest to witness David Cole being declared as master of the lodge for a further year.
There were 53 members and guests in attendance; some of whom were from Ambleside and Windermere lodges in the adjacent province of Cumberland and Westmorland. Hawkshead Lodge meets at the Market House in the main square of Hawkshead, but of necessity hold their rehearsals in Ambleside and Windermere Masonic Halls.
Joining David Grainger were group chairman Alan Jones, his deputy and current Provincial Junior Grand Warden Peter Schofield, together with group secretary Barry Hadley. Also adding lustre to the occasion were acting officers in the persons of Keith Kemp, John Houlding, Harry Gilgour, John Broadhurst and Scott Devine.
The ceremony was very much truncated but nonetheless proceeded with utmost dignity. David Grainger thanked the WM for greatly assisting the lodge by agreeing to serve for another year.
One of the characteristics of installation day at Hawkshead is that the Market Hall in which the ceremony is held has to be emptied of the furniture of the lodge and furnished with the tables and chairs for the installation banquet. Consequently, the assembled throng need to go elsewhere – which just happens to be the local hostelries where an aperitif or two are imbibed. It made for a most convivial way to enjoy some later summer sunshine and is becoming something of a tourist attraction in its own right.
