With Corinthian Lodge No 2350 of Hindley Masonic Hall having so many veterans of HM Forces and emergency services as members of the lodge and with a commitment to supporting the military and emergency services community, both serving and veterans, it was only a matter of time before a discussion into becoming a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant began and in January 2021 the lodge made its application to become a full signatory.
Peter Newell, secretary and group representative of the lodge, explained that this application had been accepted and that the lodge supports those who proudly protect our nation, who do so with honour, courage, and commitment, the Armed Forces Covenant is the nation’s commitment to them.
It is a pledge that together they acknowledge and understand that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve with their lives.
The covenant focuses on helping members of the armed forces community have the same access to government and commercial services and products as any other citizen.
This support is provided in a number of areas including:
- education and family well-being
- having a home
- starting a new career
- access to healthcare
- financial assistance
- discounted services
The covenant supports serving personnel, service leavers, veterans and their families and is fulfilled by the different groups that have committed to making a difference. These include:
- Central government, overseen by the Ministerial Covenant and Veterans Board
- Single services (Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force)
- Businesses of all sizes
- Local government
- Cadet forces and their adult volunteers
Becoming a signatory to the covenant will further enhance the lodge profile in respect to the Members’ Pathway by demonstrating a commitment to recognising the value serving personnel, reservists, veterans, and military families bring to our organisation. The lodge will seek to uphold the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant, by:
- Promoting the fact that the lodge is an armed forces friendly organisation.
- Offering support to our local cadet units, either in our local community or in local schools, where possible.
- Aiming to actively participate in Armed Forces Day.
As part of this pathway, the lodge will commemorate Remembrance Day by participating in the Hindley Memorial Parade and wreath laying ceremonies.
The lodge will be offering support to veteran’s organisations within the local community and nationally where possible and will be aiming to actively participate in local and National Armistice Days.
Corinthian Lodge, the first in the Wigan Group to become a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant expect to organise an event in the near future to publicise this within the Hindley area to raise awareness of Freemasonry in Hindley.
