Attendees at a meeting of Lodge of Good Fellowship No 5901 witnessed the initiation into Freemasonry of Frank Nicholson, the father of lodge member Steve Nicholson. Frank made the decision to follow in his son’s Masonic footsteps at the young age of 89. To enhance the occasion, Frank’s son-in-law Bill Nicholson was invited to make the journey from Lodge St Kenneth No 1441, in the Scottish constitution, to offer his support and congratulations. The event was further enhanced by the presence of the Preston Group Chairman Steve Bolton.
Master of the lodge David Radford agreed that it would be appropriate if Sean Doyle, a past master of the lodge and long-time friend of Steve and Frank was to take the master’s chair for the ceremony and for Steve to temporarily relinquish his position as the lodge secretary to act as the junior deacon for the ceremony.
The ceremony was conducted in an excellent manner with Steve guiding his father round the lodge as the ceremony progressed. The working tools of the first degree and the first degree charge were presented in an equally excellent manner by Ray Birkbeck.
The ceremony concluded with Steve Bolton welcoming Frank into Freemasonry as a member of the Lodge of Good Fellowship and a member of the Preston Group.
Later in the evening, the festive board proved a happy occasion with everyone looking forward to celebrating Frank’s first 50 years in Masonry. It was noted that this was the first time an initiate has significantly altered the age profile of the lodge.
In response, Frank said he was looking forward to a further increase in his Masonic knowledge, by observing an initiation ceremony from the side lines. He should not have long to wait, as an initiation ceremony, conducted by David Radford, is scheduled for the next meeting of the lodge.
