Starkie Lodge No 1070, has once again held their annual summer social, this time in the form of a treasure hunt organised by the WM, Martin Bos and his wife Pam. After a sustained period of sunshine and high temperatures, the intrepid band of over 30 brethren, along with wives, friends and family, braved the elements on the wettest day of the summer to take part in a highly enjoyable day out.
Gathering in the Barrel House in Birkdale Village, Pam and Martin had laid on some refreshments for those taking part and once everybody had arrived, the clue sheets were distributed. With a total of nine teams setting off at staggered intervals, the race was on to become the Starkie champion for 2018 with the winner being the team who answered the most clues correctly.
With a mixture of both easy and dastardly instructions leading the teams to locations in Formby, Hightown and Altcar, cars were seen hurtling past each other only to pass again in the opposite direction several minutes later having failed to solve the clue. However, after several hours and with no-one falling by the wayside, the contestants gathered for a celebratory meal at Sorrento in Formby where they were able to relax and regale each other with tales of daring do, on another successful lodge social.
As is usual for the brethren, a collection was taken which raised a total of £60 which Martin decided would be donated to Childflight, a very worthwhile charity who provide holidays for terminally ill children.
Upon completion of the meal, Martin announced that the winner was Dave Parker’s team, with Steve Cropper’s team in second place and Martin Maynard’s team bringing up a creditable bronze medal position and all the winners were given a bottle prize donated by Martin and Pam.
Importantly, after a most enjoyable sojourn and a further cementing of the bonds of friendship in this close-knit lodge, there were no real losers!
