At the 2022 installation meeting Clive Astley was installed as WM of Carnforth Lodge No 4951 in the presence of the Provincial Grand Master Tony Harrison’s representative, Vice Chairman of Lancaster Group Scott Devine. Scott stood in at short notice in place of past group chairman Jim Wilson. Scott was accompanied by grand officer Derek Thornhill Past Deputy Provincial Grand Master of East Lancashire, along with Provincial grand officers Past Provincial Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies Ken Needham and Past Provincial Assistant Grand Pursuivant Joe Crabtree.
Clive was born in Blackburn in 1944 and worked in the wholesale grocer’s family business until the business was sold in 1993. Since then, he has been buying, selling and renting property. He was initiated into Cathedral Lodge No 7814 in East Lancashire in 1978 and was WM in 1984 and 1999 and was promoted to Past Provincial Deputy Grand Sword Bearer in 1993.
In 2008 Clive moved to Salcombe in Devon with his new partner and moved back to Lancashire three years ago, living near Carnforth. He has two sons and at the last count, nine grandchildren. His youngest son Matthew joined Carnforth Lodge four years ago and Clive was delighted to be able to conduct Matthew’s master Mason’s ceremony.
At his installation ceremony, Clive was presented by Matt Astley. Installing officers were Richard Blenkharn, as senior warden, Ian Allison as junior warden and Maurice Townley as inner guard. The third degree working tools were presented by the WM’s son Matt Astley; those of the, second degree by Bill Harwood and the first degree tools by Steve Birch. The WM appointed Steve Barrett as senior warden and Stephen Horrocks as junior warden.
The address to the master was given by Ian Allison and that to the wardens by Bill Manderson. The organist was Peter Wood and the master’s song was performed by Graham Beevers. 48 brethren attended the festive board which was held at Kerneforde Hall and a raffle raised £400.
