Assistant Provincial Grand Master of the Province of West Lancashire Duncan Smith asked Provincial Grand Chaplain Reverend Canon John Hall, together with the Third Provincial Grand Principal in Royal Arch Reverend Canon Godfrey Ian Hirst, to organise a service to remember those who had passed to the Grand Lodge Above during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The brethren of the North Fylde, South Fylde and Blackpool Groups, lead by their respective chairmen, John Cross, John Robbie Porter and David Cook, together with the Assistant to the Provincial Grand Principals David Barr assembled in the grand surrounding of St Peter’s Church, Fleetwood, a fitting backdrop as the church has had a long association with the Masonic community.
The service started with a procession down the centre aisle with the three group chairmen each carrying a candle representing their group, which were placed on a table in front of the altar.
The service started with Rev John saying: “Tonight we remember before God all those who have departed this life and now rest in His presence; especially we remember those who have departed this life due to the pandemic and disease of COVID.”
During a particularly moving portion of the service lead by John Hall and Godfrey Hirst, Duncan Smith read the Lamentations and the names of those who had passed away were shown on a screen in the church.
After the names had been displayed, the ‘Last Post’ was played by the WM of Wayfarers Lodge No 7544 Barry Thompson.
At the end of the service, the brethren, together with their partners, sombrely partook of refreshments before departing into the evening.
