No fire – no hot food

When George Ormrod of Composite Lodge No 5382 heard that the 2nd Bramhall Scout Group had a dilemma, he swung into action and, through one of his companies, provided them with six cooking grates.

David Dickinson, Assistant Scout Leader of the Group, explained that they are a traditional Scout Group which still believes in outdoor camping and in cooking their meals over a camp fire. When planning a nine-day camp at Windermere in August, they realised that their cooking grates could no longer take the heat and would need to be replaced.

After trying several companies without success, a relative of one of the Scouts recommended George Ormrod and as soon as George realised that it was for a very good cause, he persuaded his suppliers to provide free delivery of the required materials, and then manufactured the cooking grates in time for their use at the summer camp.

David Dickinson said: “The boys soon realised the importance of the fire and the grates because, no fire – no hot food.” The whole group celebrated with three extra burgers each. David said they owed a debt of gratitude to George and Composite Lodge. George hopes that there may be other ways that the Lodge can help the Scout Group in the future.

£1,250 for Francis House Hospice

When George Calf of Shepherd Eastwood Mark Lodge died last year he bequeathed £1,000 to charity. The members of his Mark Lodge decided to donate the bequest to Francis House Hospice.

The Brethren of Prince Leopold, Doric and Parkfield Lodge also decided to make a donation of £250 to Francis House, so Brian Hayes, Chairman of the South Eastern Group, visited Francis House to present them with cheques totalling £1,250.

The money is to be used towards refurbishing the laundry room.Francis House offers the families of very sick children a respite from their role as carers and gives the children a loving home from home. The philosophy of Francis House and Rainbow Family Trust flows from the belief in the sanctity of life, and the dignity of the person.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Supermason

When Peter Beswick was appointed Group Charity Representative for the South Eastern Group, he wanted a campaign that would raise funds for the 2010 Festival at the same time as giving the brethren the opportunity to show what they were capable of.

And so SUPERMASON was born and soon posters were appearing at Urmston and Heaton Moor Masonic Halls and on the South Eastern Group website. Challenging marathon runners, water skiers, cyclists, walkers, climbers, et al, all are encouraged to take on something special for the Festival.

Watch this space for details of feats of derring-do.

FOUR LODGES AMALGAMATE

The Provincial Grand Master, RWBro Colin Penty Wright, and a full Provincial Team, led a celebration of the Amalgamation of Urmston, Westbourne, Great Stone and Talbot Lodges.

The four Lodges amalgamated to form Phoenix Lodge No 1730. In a moving ceremony at Urmston Masonic Hall, first developed in the Province of West Lancashire, more than 90 Freemasons including the brethren of the four Lodges, supported by many guests from far and wide, were privileged to witness a superb spectacle from the Provincial team, led by the Provincial Grand Master.

At the Social Board, the Provincial Grand Master told the assembled Brethren that this was the fourth amalgamation ceremony carried out in the South Eastern Group. He cautioned the members of Phoenix Lodge that this ceremony was just the start of a long term process, and there was much more to be done.

"Master Masons are the future of the Lodge and it is important that by use of the various schemes available within the Province, Master Masons are recruited and supported," he said. "We must embrace change but not at the expense of the standards of Masonry. Yet whilst looking to the future we must not forget the wonderful history of the four lodges, so magnificently illustrated by the chain of office from Talbot Lodge, worn with pride by the WM of Phoenix Lodge, WBro Ken Allen."

In reponse the Worshipful Master pledged that Phoenix Lodge would go forward with strength.

£500 FOR STRETFORD SCOUTS

When the 1st. Stretford Scout Group found that their new premises were flooding, they realised that they needed some shelving to store their equipment.

Thanks to WBro. Laurence Overington of Phoenix Lodge, who has been involved with scouting all his life, and the Masonic Province of West Lancashire Community Fund, a donation of £500 ensured that the precious equipment could be stored out of harms way.

WBro. Laurence Overington and WBro. Brian Hayes, Chairman of the South Eastern Group, presented Assistant Cub Leader Peter Prescott with a cheque for £500, accompanied by delighted Cubs, Johnny, Michael and Oliver.

The 1st. Stretford Scout Group has over 50 members gathered from the local area and is in the process of renovating new premises to add to their facilities. Any donations to this work will be gratefully received.

Sponsored Walk Presentation

W.Bro. Brian Hayes, Chairman of the S.E. Group, recently presented a cheque for £3,000 donated by the brethren of the Eccles and South East group of lodges, to Mrs. Pam Daley, Area Fund Organiser for Francis House, a hospice for terminally ill children.

The money had been accrued as a result of the sponsored walk by W.Bro. Alf Short and will be used to build a commemorative garden; a project dear to the heart of Sister Aloysius, a founder and until recently, the Chief Administrator of the Hospice.

W.Bro. Wallis Marshall also presented a cheque for £400 from the brethren of Prince Leopold Lodge No. 1588
