FREEMASONRY IN ST. HELENS AND PRESCOT

Freemasonry has been practised locally since 1753, when the first Lodge in the area was constituted. That Lodge, Lodge of Loyalty No 86, meeting at Prescot, is still thriving with an active membership of nearly 50 brethren.

The St Helens and Prescot Group has a membership of almost 500 Freemasons organised into 15 Lodges, seven meeting in Prescot and six in St Helens Masonic Hall. Both Halls have excellent facilities, St Helens Masonic Hall having a particularly attractive Lodge Room of some renown throughout the Masonic Province of West Lancashire.

The majority of all Masonic Lodges meet monthly between September and May and adjourn for the summer. At Lodge meetings we learn about Masonic principles and their application to the betterment of every day life and the welfare of society in general. Lodge meetings are typically followed by a meal, sometimes formal, sometimes a light buffet. Before and during dining we enjoy each others’ fellowship and that of our visiting guests. Views and opinions on every topic imaginable are exchanged and discussed, with the express exception of religion and politics.

A particularly important aspect of Freemasonry is the consideration for those less fortunate. All Lodges raise money for charity, principally from within their own membership. These monies are applied not only to Masonic causes but significant sums are also donated to local, national and even international appeals. The St Helens and Prescot Lodges are active in the local community and have established relationships with the youth organisations, our hospice and hospitals.

But, being a Freemason is no more expensive than, say, being a member of a golf club or leisure centre. Freemasonry does not discriminate between a person’s background or occupation. Any man who can afford the moderate costs, is over 21 years of age, believes in a Supreme Being and shares our moral and social values, is warmly welcomed into the fraternity.

Individual Lodges and the Group as a whole regularly organise a variety of mixed social activities where we are joined by our wives, partners, friends and family. It is true to say that in recent years Freemasonry has become very much more family orientated. One enduring annual event is the Group Family Carol Service held at one of our local Churches where the St Helens and Prescot Freemasons are joined by the regular congregation as well as their own family and friends.
