Oncology Appeal passes £ 30,000

The Northerrn Group Oncology appeal has now exceeded £30k against the original target of £15K.

The final tranche of money will be handed over shortly when the isolation unit purchased by the fund is formally opened. The initial £15K was presented in May when the day unit was opened and £7.5 K pledged by Province was made available for the purchase of HIVAC pumps which are used for metering of Chemotheraputic drugs.

Extra funds will be used to purchase further HIVAC pumps. The Isolation Unit is comprised of a Barrier room, where antiseptic preparation is made by anyone needing to enter the Isolation room, where the patient is treated.

There is also a bath/shower room in the isolation area. The unit will be used by patients whose treatment or condition has compromised their immune system.

The original idea for the Northern Group to engage in this appeal came from W.Bro. Derek Jackson of Hartington Lodge No.1021 who sadly went to the Grand lodge Above two weeks before the Day Unit opened. Derek was also a keen Mark Mason and his Brethren from that degree are holding a sponsored walk on Saturday 4th September 2004.

"The Northern Group (of 13 lodges) can be proud of a fine effort."

Knockout £104,000 raised

In January the Northern Group held its 18th boxing tournament at the Cumbria Grand Hotel, Grange-Over-Sands. As usual this popular event was a sell out and the assembled guests were treated to dinner followed by several excellent bouts of boxing.

The bouts ranged from schoolboy to adult middleweight and occasioned raucous encouragement from the spectators. Lord Cavendish of Furness attended as a guest and expressed his delight with the proceedings.

The Event is organised by a committee of lodge representatives from each of the Group lodges who are ably lead by W.Bro. Ralph Walker. The boxing matches are arranged by Mr A Willoughby of Kendal Amateur Boxing Club.

The event usually raises in the region of £6 – 7000 each year and this year was no exception, to the extent that the total raised over the eighteen years now exceeds £104000!

Funds are gleaned by sponsorship, an auction, a tote and, perhaps most popularly, by a team of young ladies who this year sold raffle tickets totalling in excess of £1700.

Funds raised are distributed equally between Masonic and local charities with past recipients including the Air Ambulance, Scouts, Sea and Mountain rescue teams and the Air Training Corps.

The next event is planned for the 21st of January 2005

Advent Carol Service

A Group Carol Service was held at Dalton Parish Church on Sunday 14th December 2003 and attended by some 65 brethren and their ladies.

Intended as a family event, the Advent Carol Service was followed by tea and biscuits in the church hall. This event was encouraged by the Vicar Rev. Mitchell who welcomed Rev Brian Oddy as guest preacher.

The Church was decorated with Xmas trees, as part of a tree decoration ‘competition’, by local groups and charities, which enhanced the festive air.

As a point of interest, the grave of Col. Baldwin, after whom Lodge no. 1398 is named, is a prominent feature of the church graveyard.

‘ONCOLOGY UNIT’ Appeal

The Northern Group have declared an appeal through the group to raise an initial £15,000 to fund an isolation unit for the new Furness Oncology Unit.

Discussed at the Group Committee meeting in late October, by Christmas 2003 two thirds of the money had been donated or pledged. Contributions from individual Lodges and Chapters are coming in apace. Including one of £300 from Brigantes Lodge in Kendal ( Cumberland & Westmorland).

Oncology is something close to the hearts of most brethren with many (too many) undergoing treatment and most families having need of the support this unit will give at some time. Most of Furness was involved in heavy industry at a time when Asbestos was a wonder material. A legacy which won’t go away for some time.

Brethren are being encouraged to make use of the Gift Aid scheme to add value to their donations If any Brother wishes to contribute or requires further information would he please contact the Group Treasurer on 01229 831718.
