14th Fairfield Scout Group thanks WLFC

The first registered date the 14th Fairfield Scout Group has on record is June 1930. It operated in the Green Lane area of Liverpool for many years, including the duration of the war years.

The group continued to operate after the war, but in the late 1950’s, early 1960’s it moved to the Knotty Ash area of Liverpool.

Between the 1960’s and the 2000’s the scout group had several bases of operation, this was for many reasons, but they always managed to bring scouting to the boys of the area, although in 2005 the group was at its lowest point in its history.

The group at that time consisted of ten beaver scouts aged 6 to 8 years, with one leader and a leader from another group helping. With the assistance of leaders from other groups and active recruitment of adults and young people the scout group then had a more secure future.

In 2006 the group made the decision to allow girls into the group. This was a major policy change for the group. This policy change was in the main promoted by the Scout Association.

Then in 2007 the scout group moved yet again. This time they moved to The Holy Spirit Church in Dovecot. This has given the group a stable base to work from and has seen the membership increase. The group presently supports 50 young people from the area for which the age range is currently from 6 to18 years old.

Because of their increased numbers and the age of their equipment, they were desperate for new equipment and applied to the West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity for a grant. The application was successful and Assistant Provincial Grand Master Ian Boswell went along to meet the group and see for himself the improvements being made. John Dean, the Group Scout Leader, thanked Ian for the grant donation of £960 from the WLFC, which is for the purchase of camping equipment for which tents and storage containers are already in place.

In stressing his appreciation to Ian, John said: “The support given from grants and donations such as this from Freemasonry, certainly do make a difference.”
