Group helps young footballers

Michael J Winterbottom, chairman of the Trafalgar Group of Lodges, has presented a cheque for £500 as a donation to the Farmers Arms Junior Football club, for their annual three-day competition at the Haven holiday camp in Pwllhelli, North Wales.

The club runs approximately 11 teams of young people, 140 in all of which four teams are selected to enter this competition. The total cost for taking the youngsters on this three-day event is in the region of £10,000. This is absorbed in the transport and accommodation costs.

The young group of managers who run teams devote something like 10 hours of voluntary time to the youngsters per week on top of which time is spent fund-raising.

The catchment area from which most of these youngsters are accepted is Anfield, Clubmoor and Norris Green. In the midst of this credit crunch it can be difficult to provide extra money from the family budget to give the opportunity for their children to attend this event so fund-raising is very important.

This donation, which was given after a request was made on behalf of the football club by Compass Lodge 7052 and helps in providing an opportunity for the youngsters to experience three days of football excitement and to keep them off the streets.
